China cat==>I know you rider best of the 70s collection. The song progression is insane for the time period. I miss the blues.... I’m not sure if pigpen was playing during this show but I hope he was. The blues died with pigpen. 💙

Pure Distilled Dead
The jamming here is tight and precise. Its hard to single out any one tune for praise, they're all great versions. The Hard to Handle influenced China> Rider is quite tasty. A great under the radar show that always puts a smile on my face.

Static, Schmatic....This show rocks!!!
If you criticize this show, and the quality of the sound......
I just don't get it.
These shows are up for our enjoyment and I really don't hear hardly anything wrong with it.
The energy of the show and the playing is sublime.
If this were indeed attended by a crowd of 300+, that's gotta be amazing in itself.

Smoke and lightning....all i can is hold on....anyone ever heard of vinyl...the background static at time is as raw as it gets.....this is live right?....no complaints here....this is one of my favorite shows...how can this music not make you want to dance?!?!

the other one
while others have commented on tape static, garica's playing on the other one is so strong that it makes the issue seem moot.to say this was a peak period for this band would a understatement.starting with port chester and going through denver of 1973 would and should go down as this bands greatest era

Some very good stuff on here,
all in all a standard '71 show.

This is one of the Greatest
Please read the full review on my blog, this is one of the best dead shows I have ever heard, and I have been listening on the archive daily for 6 or seven years.

I was there
Listening to this really brings back memories. I was at this concert, didn't pay anything to get in. I had a beautiful girlfriend who didn't wear a bra to the concert which drew a lot of attention. Tkhe place was filled with smoke. All I can say is wow, 40 years ago!

The list of this in Deadbase is pretty off. I guess it hasn't been updated in awhile. This looks and sounds like quite a good copy of this show. The band hit a lot of spots in '71. Because of the Dead, I probably know where dozens more universities are located than I normally would. Thanks boys!

just found this, I was at the show, if this is half as good as my memories of the concert it will be absolutely friggin amazing! Form says rating is optional, but won't post without one so I rated the concert not the recording. I'll be back to r-rate it after enough listening time...

Beggars can't be choosers.....DON'T PASS THIS SHOW UP you BOZO!.
The Soundman got the mix right on this one! GOOD JOB!!!
There are some minor level issues, and minor intermittent static, nothing compared to your LP's.
Get over the "static" cry babies. these recordings will never skip or get stuck in the groove repeating the samething over and over until you lift the tone arm off the damn thing.
So get real. The recording isn't perfect, BUT the performance is! And that is what COUNTS!
The "static" that other reviewers are referring to reminds me of the "FM Stereo" static we'd encounter back in the 70's when we were too far away from the radio signal...not a big deal, it happens occasionally in this recording. No big deal.
The static is like you'd encounter it on your FM radio. If you didn't get up and push the FM Stereo "mute" button on the receiver you got static in stereo. Like it is here. So what?
The static kind-a-brings back memories of the underground FM broadcast radio stations in NYC that would broadcast THE GRATEFUL DEAD bootleg albums back in the late 60's and early 70's.
The show is April 71, Garcia's sound is incredible...HELLO??? Anyone there? Come in, over? DOWNLOAD THIS SHOW NOW! Don't be a BOZO!
What are you thinking? Listen to "China Cat Sunflower/IKYR",and Sugar Magnolia before you pass this show up, sheesh!
Don't miss this performance of CCS/IKYR. Listen to it, it's amazing. NO "AAA" on CCS/IKYR.
Be kind and forgiving to the minor audio blemishes. Their attacks are infrequent and harmless. Known to audiophiles as "AAA". Authentic Audio Anomalies.
The boys are truely making history on stage this night. Magic is being made and recorded for eternity, and here it is for your ears to indulge in...bathe your mind in some of the best music ever performed in the world. Made in the USA by American musicians. The world could not produce THE GRATEFUL DEAD in 2,000 years, but the USA did in it in less than 200 years. These boys are really something.
Static, distortion, and hot levels, from time to time do plague this recording, but so what? It's a LIVE RECORDING OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD in 1971 get over it.
Be thankful it's here and they are throwing these crumbs to us dogs.
China Cat/IKYR and Sugar Magnolia are truely amazing and right up there with the 10-04-70 versions.
Wharf Rat has the worse static interference, and its not bad at all.
Hard To Handle is 11:08 long and is as good as the 04-26-71 version. I never thought I'd say that...
This show is played with perfection. THE GRATEFUL DEAD at their best. If it get's better than this, its got to be a felony in all 50 states.
So the recording is not perfect, but what is? The Hippies did their best and I am thankful for that.
It wasn't just the kool-aid you know?...These guys could really play for BIG $$$...
Add this show to your collection if you know what is good for you...
Eat, drink, be merry and listen to THE GRATEFUL DEAD.
I LOVE THE U.S.A.
THANKS FOR THE LOVE.

static ruins it for me
Can't listen to this again. That static ruins it. I love 1971, but will listen to other shows and not this one. The music and playing are very good but that noise is like fingernails on a chalkboard. First set ok, but the static picks up from cryptical onward. Also some distortion on the vocals as noted below. Why bother when so many other good shows with much better sound?

ok, right from the start, static, true...A bit annoying, but the band is really on...Birdsong is not what we have all came to know and love...still getting on it's feet you know. Bobby turned up a bit too much. Especially during Sunshine Daydream...hard to listen to.
Cryptical melts...good time for the dead.

Great 71 show, incredible find! I believe the announcer was the Dead's Promoter at the time, Mr John Culter, who I believe the Band met through the stones earlier in the year.

During the Dead's career there were peaks and valleys - this is a peak
There is some annoying static in the right channel let me get that right out of the way - that said, this is a really hot show one of the first bird songs, hot china>rider, epic other one and as I said there were times they really played hard relative to other points in the long history of the band - they played with alot of soul here, sadly did not play second that emotion much... Enjoy the whole second set!

hot '71 spring tour
The '71 spring tour is legendary for many reasons, not the least of which is the killer Fillmore East run. This show seems to have popped up out of nowhere. I wasn't aware of it's existance on tape until I found it here. The boys seem to get better and better as the tour works it's way to the Fillmore. Great versions of standard '71 fare here and very nice sound quality.

Don't Miss This!
Up until recently, I hadn't heard much of these mid-April shows, except for 4/18 which circulated pretty widely and others in bits and pieces. Now with LAMA on the bus, I'm getting to re-evaluate some of these never heard shows. With the great shows on April 4,6 and 8 bookended with 4/28 and 4/29 on the other end, these have some hard competition. Many of these are just flat out BOOGIE shows, 4/17 and 4/21 being great examples. But this show really spans more of the broad spectrum of Dead sounds in 1971, much like 4/28 with everything from a spaced-out Other One to a funky Hard To Handle, and lots in between!
Both Bird Song and Wharf Rat are now finding their way to becoming the longer jammed versions of 1972 and 1973 here (12 minutes and 11 minutes respectively) and the Second That Emotion is delivered with greasy gusto.
I was a bit disappointed to see that Dead Base was mistaken in that there is in fact no Dark Star. But after I heard the Other One, and a bowl of Cheerios, I had forgotten all about it! Bill's solo is a powereful lead-in, and then they proceed to blast Lewisburg into the 4th diminsion! 16 minutes of fire and fury, with
Jerry soaring on the wah wah, with some spacy Dark Star sparkles in between the rushes. Almost hints at some longer and more evolved Other Ones to come later in 71, and even the Europe 72 versions.
Some mild distortion in one channel, but it didn't get in the way of pure pleasure. A solid show.
Dr. Flashback ;-)

grateful for the dead
I was at this show.
Garcia palyed with the New Riders from 8:15 until 10:30.
The Dead came on at 11:00 and were still playing when we left at 3:30.
I've seen Garcia, the Dead and and Weir and Lesh many times since then, but I have to say this is the best Dead show I was to.
The show is wonderful but heck I was there so take anything I say with a grain of salt Cause I was 16.
Sparsely attended (300-400?).
And a special HEY! to the guy from New Jersey who was the walking pharmacy.

Quick note - excellent feel to the group dynamic in the couple of tracks I've listened to. Tight jamming. Sound quality is decent(+) with some wavering. Very special China/Rider transition and jams.
Whoever posted the playlists for these made some pretty major mistakes. This show starts with Trucking.
